Edgewood Arts Trail

Thanks to a grant from the Art in Public Places Project of New Mexico Arts, the Town of Edgewood is hosting five temporary art installations this summer. Selected projects are on display from June 30-August 30, and provide an opportunity for artists to share their creativity with the community and be paid for their efforts through the grant.

A total of 25 qualified submissions were received from throughout the state, and a local committee* selected five projects which they feel will intrigue and inspire Edgewood residents and visitors. The selected artists’ works combine to create the Edgewood Art Trails, providing residents and visitors the opportunity to spend time experiencing the artistic and natural beauty of Edgewood, while contemplating their own perspective on “Persistence.”

Five locations for the installations are: 1) NEW Edgewood Library and 2) Edgewood Playgroud (both at former Edgewood Elementary site), 3) Edgewood Police/Animal Control, 4) Edgewood Sports Pavilion/Soccer Field; and 5) Wildlife West Nature.

This wonderful opportunity was brought to the community through Route 66 Arts Alliance, a local non-profit organization of artists and performers who regularly host and promote art shows and performances, offer art-related classes for adults and teens, and a run a summer arts program for youth.

The theme for this project is Persistence. NM Arts suggests references for persistence: the persistence of drought climates, persistence of Route 66, persistence of memory/nostalgia, persistence of small cities in New Mexico, persistence of cultures, persistence of survival, persistence of high desert flora and fauna. Artists may use their own interpretation, not limited the these.

*A panel made up of Edgewood community members from Town of Edgewood, Route 66 Arts Alliance, Wildlife West Nature Park, and Edgewood Chamber of Commerce selected the five projects from all submissions.
