New Mexico Press Association this weekend recognized The Independent. Our local newspaper brought home two awards from the Better Newspaper Contest, and The Independent’s editor, Leota Harriman, was elected Second Vice President of the press association, putting her in charge of the contest next year. She has already served two terms as a NM Press Association board member.

The Independent won first place for headline writing, and second place for its website (launched in November 2015 with the help of James Reader of Digital Solutions & Computer Shack , who built the site).

The contest is peer-judged and open to all members of the press association (divisions determined by the size of newspaper and whether daily or weekly). CONGRATULATIONS!
