RETRO 66 Announces Plans for 2019 Event

RETRO 66 Vice President, Debbie Pogue (Sunset Motel), made the first public announcement for a huge 2019 event being organized by that non-profit while at Edgewood Chamber of Commerce’s Autumn Mixer at Sierra Blanca Brewing Company in Moriarty. RETRO has already been working on the event for about a year, and is now seeking to get businesses and the community involved.

The catalyst for the September 2019 event is Moriarty’s 66th birthday on the Mother Road, an event RETRO 66 has named, “Sixty Six on 66.” They will be providing area residents and visitors with a two-day celebration of our town’s history on Route 66 and the premier of ‘Retribution Road’, a play about the dramatic events of the re-routing of Route 66 from Santa Rosa, through Moriarty, to Albuquerque. RETRO envisions participants’ events to be as homespun as a Rt. 66 yard sale that stretches from Moriarty to Tijeras or as wild and crazy as the weekend of Tucumcari’s ‘Rockabilly on the Route’.  The methods of participation will be encouraged to be as different as they are memorable.

Realizing the proportions of a project like this are quite grand, RETRO is focusing on combining numerous small ‘events’ around the area that will make the grand event possible. The members of RETRO 66 hope you will join them in any way you feel you can manage.  RETRO would like to meet with businesses and groups about your ideas and help you find partners to share the cost and the fun of putting on your event.  Just think of it as being one of the candles on a large cake; yes, we would get by without your candle, but what a light we can shine on our area if everyone takes a small part!

There will be opportunities for vendors and sponsorships as well, so if your business doesn’t lend itself to an ‘event’ type of activity, you don’t have to be left out of the limelight.  Just contact RETRO and let them know what you could sell or what size sponsorship you would be able to manage.  RETRO’s job will be to highlight all of the participating organizations, churches and businesses in all of our publicity. We intend to advertise the event state-wide, regionally and in some national publications for the six months prior to the event. Please join the fun!! RETRO 66 recently completed a mobile License Plate Wall exhibiting New Mexico’s stretch of Route 66. The non-profit has also been responsible for neon restoration project (Whiting Bros. – Moriarty), Route 66 road decals (Tijeras to Moriarty), and murals along 66 (Lisa’s Truck Stop – Moriarty).
