Business who would like to participate in our “Holiday Scavenger Hunt” on November 25, should contact our executive director or phone us Info and materials for participating businesses.
With temperatures dropping, the first frost behind us, the holiday season is quickly approaching. It’s that time when people are start thinking about big family gatherings and shopping for presents. But, with the excitement often comes stress and exhaustion. So, how can you make this year different?
Keep it simple, silly! Don’t spend your valuable time traveling from your community to the metropolis west of the mountains, only to circle jam-packed parking lots and encounter crowded malls. And, all the extra money spent on gasoline and snacks – no, thank you!
Put the personal back into your holidays and help your community at the same time. Wouldn’t it be nice to know the gifts and meals you purchase locally also support local families whose businesses or employer’s business is located in the East Mountains? Look for “Shop Small” signs and banners, and when you’re shopping, tell them you heard about it on the Edgewood Chamber website.
At the very least, you save time staying local and reduce your gasoline expenses by traveling much fewer miles. But the real advantage is the opportunity for more unique items, made right here by local artisans and crafters. Friends and family appreciate gift certificates to local places – no hassle of driving into the crowded city. And, it’s a great way to meet your neighbors!
Do you know the East Mountain region is home to numerous small retail and home-based enterprises? A number of those have award-winning products! For example, New Mexico’s Best Pizza (Pizza Barn), Favorite Breakfast Burrito (Katrinah’s East Mountain Grill), and the newest Gold-Medal Brew (Sierra Blanca Brewing Company).
How about gift certificates or products that relax and comfort? You can find locally therapeutic massage, acupuncture, custom soaps and lotions, and essential oils. What about home repairs – not glamorous, but always appreciated. Try adding yummy, locally-made green chile sausage, goat cheese, or salsa to a holiday meal.
Looking for that unique item, be it nostalgic or hand-crafted? Check out the numerous opportunities on our “Trinkets & Treasures” trail. You’ll find creativity at its best!

*Small Business Saturday originated in 2010, began it’s “Shop Small’ campaign as an effort to encourage shoppers to patronize small, local businesses for their holiday shopping. The concept caught on and has become an annual tradition, with this year’s events happening on November 25 locally and nationwide. “Shop Small” helped spark the groundswell of enthusiasm for shopping locally. And, why not? There are so many benefits to keeping it local.
